Voter Identification Law

Whether and when the Voter ID law will be fully in effect for future elections is not certain and is currently the subject of litigation.

PA’s Voter ID law requires all voters to present photo ID when voting at the polls, but those photo ID requirements are NOT currently in effect. All voters will be asked to present photo ID when they appear at the polls to vote, but they will be allowed to cast a regular ballot without a photo ID. Voters who are voting for the first time in a polling place are still required under existing law to present a form of ID.

Absentee Ballot

If you are unable to attend your polling place in person on Election Day, you may be eligible to vote by absentee ballot. To vote by absentee ballot, a voter must apply to the County Board of Elections for an absentee ballot. The County Board of Elections will send a paper absentee ballot to the voter. The voter then completes the ballot and returns it to the County Board of Elections.

The last day to apply for a civilian absentee ballot for the 2016 Primary Election is Tuesday, April 19, 2019 and the last day for County Boards of Elections to receive completed voted civilian absentee ballots is Friday, April 22, 2016. The last day for the County Boards of Elections to receive voted military and overseas absentee ballots is Tuesday, May 3, 2016.

How to Apply for an Absentee Ballot

If you need an absentee ballot for the upcoming general election, please download and complete the Absentee Ballot application. The completed application should be mailed to:

     Bucks County Board of Elections
     55 E. Court St.
     Doylestown, PA 18901

  • New identification requirements took effect in November 2012.
  • Voters must provide drivers license number, last 4 digits of Social Security Number, or a copy of an acceptable photo ID when applying for an absentee ballot.
  • Voters may provide identifying number to county over the phone, by email or mail.
